'CAT. Un anglès viatja per Catalunya per veure si existeix' ('CAT. An Englishman travels around Catalonia to see if it exists', Catalan original available only) is an on-the-road description of a journey around Catalonia, from the huge industrial city of Hospitalet out west to the border with Valencia and back east to some of the remoter areas of the Pyrenees. Everything is described exactly as it was perceived at the time of writing: towns that felt creepily unfriendly; wonderful, little-known towns that were happily monument-free; attacks of diarrhoea; all the people I came across, including a prematurely dead friend and a semi-retired rock musician; my own unstable state of mind during the journey; the endless struggle with Catalan public transport (I do not have a driving licence); and so on.

The book was commercially successful, going into seven editions.

A couple of review comments follow:

Rafael Vallbona in EL MUNDO:
'An intelligent, amusing, ironic book, with none of those predictable commonplaces which we natives often use when talking about Catalonia; a book for discovering the country as it really is.'

Jordi Llavina in LA VANGUARDIA:
'Literature, yes: what people usually call literature of the self. However, in this, case with a self that is not in the least dull, whose eyes thirst to see new things, and whose mouth also thirsts. For beer, for stories, for words.'

The first chapter is currently being translated into German for a new anthology of modern Catalan narrative.

'CAT' was sent to one of the few English publishers that has a Catalan-language reader. The publisher wrote back saying: 'this is very well done, but too small for us'.
