'Privilegiat' ('Privileged' would be the translation, although the English version – available on this website under "Books – Unpublished Work" - is called 'Private Country'). This novel was first written in English, a process that took three years. I then did a Catalan version, which was published in 2001. A Spanish translation from the English by Maria Antonia Merini (also available on this website), appeared in the same year. Despite the enthusiasm of the publishers, other manuscript-stage readers and my agent, Antonia Kerrigan, 'Privilegiat' did not receive the reaction anyone – least of all myself, who had for once made the mistake of being optimistic – expected. Catalan readers perhaps expected a lighter book along the lines of 'CAT' (see "Books") and instead got this account of a violent, dysfunctional, alcoholic young Londoner and his proxy relationship with the writer Malcolm Lowry.

Just two critics gave it an unconditional thumbs-up. One was Lluís Bonada, writing for the Valencian-Catalan-Balearic current affairs magazine 'El Temps' who said:
'One of the most surprising, singular and ambitious books to appear in Catalan literature in recent years: "Privilegiat" by Matthew Tree. A book which honours Catalan literature."

The other was Martin Beagles, writing for the Times Literary Supplement about the Spanish translation:
'This is a technically competent book with the force of a lashing gale. There is no question that it deserves an English-language readership, but credit will always be due to Catalonia for having discovered its author first.'
(see "Books" – "Unpublished Work" – "Private Country" for the full review).

Six years on, it has yet to find that English-language readership.
